Designed by Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini, Mezura is a typographic celebration of the intricate relationship between geometry and the art of writing. It takes inspiration from the discovery that in both Old Style letterforms and arabic Naskh calligraphy the flowing movements of the drawing hand are guided by an underlying framework of proportions and measurements, having ofter the circle as a defining element. But, while many multiscript fonts start from the Latin alphabet, Mezura began its journey by embracing the grace and elegance of the Naskh calligraphic style, with the Latin letters being designed to capture the essence of their Arabic counterparts.
By employing the Naskh style as a starting point, Pancini wanted to estabilish a deep connection to the rich cultural heritage of Arabic calligraphy, while at the same time offering a contemporary, digital-oriented typeface. Optimized for on-screen and in-print readability, Mezura offers the designers more flexibility through its weight range developed with a "mono-width" approach, meaning that the space used by each letter remains constant even if the weight is changed. This choice results in a peculiar look of the bolder weights, that mirrors the way Arabic letters change their appearance in heavier styles, and results in both a functional design feature as well as a unique aesthetic flavor. Design approach and details also change along the weight axis, with light and bold cuts both chosing display-oriented letterforms, while the regular - text oriented weight maximizes readability with its open counterspaces and relaxed proportions.

الأَبْجَدِيَّة العَرَبِيَّة هي الأبجدية التي تستخدم الحروف العربية في الكتابة، وتوصف بأنها أكمل نظم الكتابة، فقد شملت معظم الأصوات التي يمكن أن ينطقها الإنسان؛ اشتقت منها الكثير من الأبجديات، وظلت الأبجدية الأكثر استخدامًا لقرون كثيرة من الزمان، وتعد حاليًا أكثر نظام كتابة استخدامًا بعد الألفبائية اللاتينية. تعتمد الكثير من اللغات على الأبجدية العربية في الكتابة، مثل: اللغة السندية، اللغة الأردية، واللغة العثمانية، واللغة الكردية، واللغة الملايوية. كان أشهر استخدام للحروف العربية في التدوين هو تدوين القرآن الكريم، ثم انتشرت الأبجدية العربية في الكثير من الأمصار، وذلك بانتشار الفتوحات الإسلامية، واتساع الدولة الإسلامية، واختلاط العرب الفاتحين بالشعوب التي كانت تحت سيطرة الفرس والبيزنطيين والأحباش، ودخول كثير من هؤلاء في الإسلام، واضطرارهم إلى تعلم ما استطاعوا من الْعرَبية، وانتشرت العربية كلغة أساسية بين هذه الشعوب، وأصبحت لغةً لجميع المسلمين، بعد أن كانت لغة خاصة بالعرب؛ واستخدمت الأبجدية العربية في كتابة العديد من اللغات، من عائلات لغوية كثيرة. تكتب الحروف العربية من اليمين إلى اليسار، بنمط يعتمد على وصل حروف الكلمة الواحدة ببعضها، وتشمل هذه الحروف الهجائية حرفًا أساسيًا، والبعض يعتبرها حرفًا باعتبار الهمزة حرفًا منفصلًا. تتصف الكتابة العربية بكونها متصلة، مما يجعلها قابلة لاكتساب أشكال هندسية مختلفة من خلال المد والرجع والاستدارة والتزوية والتشابك والتداخل والتركيب. وتمتلك الأبجدية العربية الكثير من الخطوط ومن أشهرها: خط النسخ وخط الرقعة وخطُّ الثُلث وغيرها الكثير من الخطوط.
