Designed by Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini in 2013, Cocogoose was first expanded in 2015 with the help of Francesco Canovaro who co-designed the decorative display weights and Andrea Tartarelli who developed the condensed widths. In 2020 a full redesign of the typeface has been published: Cocogoose Pro now includes new widths, weights, open type features and characters, thanks to the help of Mario De Libero.
Influenced by vernacular sign-painting and modernist ideals, Cocogoose is drawn on a classic geometric sans skeleton, softened by rounded corners and slight visual corrections. Its very low contrast, dark colour and tall x-height make it a solid choice for all designers looking for a powerful display typeface for logos, headings and vintage-inspired branding. The tall x-height makes texts set in Cocogoose very readable even at small sizes, while the bold regular weight allows for maximum impact when used as a branding, signage or decorative typeface.
Cocogoose Pro was designed as a highly reliable tool for design problem solving, and given all the features a graphic designer needs, starting from its wide range of widths and weights. Its 2000+ latin, cyrillic and greek characters make sure it covers over 200 languages worldwide, while its comprehensive set of open type features allows faultless typesetting thanks to small capitals, positional numbers & case sensitive forms. A wide range of alternate letterforms, developed along nine different stylistic sets, gives you an extra level of design fine-tuning. The layerable and colour-ready display variants include inline, outline, shadow and a letterpress version that can simulate the effect of old print, also thanks to programmed randomization of its letters.
Cocogoose Pro has been completely re-engineered in 2020 to include extra features and technologies. A variable font version allows you to fine tune precisely the appearance of the text while minimizing download size on the web. A darkmode weight range has been added to the whole family, to keep consistency of effect when the typeface is used in reverse on the web and in dark mode interfaces. Also, a new text subfamily has been developed for body text usage, to keep the look and feel of Cocogoose while maximizing readability on screen and on the printed page.

A COCOGOOSE TALE
The mesmerizing story of Clyde Callahan.
In the notably peculiar town of Pecanville during the forties, there existed a most enigmatic sign painter by the name of Clyde "Cocogoose" Callahan. No, he wasn't your garden-variety artisan with a common brush and an ordinary easel. Cocogoose was a man of exceptionally peculiar proclivities - a term that here means "inclination or predisposition towards a particular activity, like painting signs" - and a mustache that defied not only the laws of gravity but also common sense and the general expectations of facial hair behavior. Cocogoose's workshop, strategically sandwiched between a suspicious-looking diner and a cinema that perpetually played black-and-white films (a choice of programming that was both strangely nostalgic and questionably redundant), emitted an aroma so peculiar that even the town's most seasoned detectives, who were accustomed to sniffing out mysteries, couldn't quite put their fingers on it. Should you put your finger on it, you would have discovered that his workshop smelled like a confounding concoction of turpentine, coffee, and a hint of conspiracy, which, as any connoisseur of olfactory oddities would tell you, is a scent known to befuddle even the most astute bloodhounds, assuming they weren't on lunch break. His fingers, well-versed in the art of sign painting, waltzed over wooden boards with the unparalleled grace of a jitterbug dancer, but with the added flair of someone solving a complex mathematical equation. Each stroke and swirl seemed to narrate a tale of its own, as if the signs were secret codes meant for decoding by a society of clandestine enthusiasts or perhaps a group of extraterrestrial crossword puzzle enthusiasts. And his mustache—oh, that mustache was rumored to harbor miniature creatures, such as tiny birds and a rogue chess club that held secret meetings under the cover of bristles, although no one could confirm this as fact or merely the byproduct of an overactive imagination. One fateful day, a Hollywood director with a penchant for the peculiar, a term that here means "sounding extremely strange," happened upon Pecanville. Intrigued by the whispers of Cocogoose's uncanny talents, the director commissioned him to create a sign for a grand movie theater in the city of angels. Cocogoose, ever the reluctant hero in this peculiar tale, accepted the challenge with a degree of hesitation that could only be described as "nearly imperceptible." When the sign was finally unveiled, the townsfolk were aghast at the sight—a masterpiece that left them more puzzled than ever, like trying to find matching socks in a tumble dryer while simultaneously contemplating the meaning of existence. As news of Cocogoose's eccentric artistry spread, so did the enigma surrounding him. His signs adorned theaters and establishments across the nation, each one a riddle wrapped in an enigma with a touch of absurdity - the kind of absurdity you'd find in a monkey playing a tambourine while riding a unicycle through a field of daisies. Cocogoose's signs weren't just signs; they were visual riddles that left the townsfolk scratching their heads, much like attempting to solve a Rubik's cube blindfolded while standing on one leg, or - even better - like discovering a secret passage to a room full of cheese in a labyrinth.
